Ultrasound

Safe, radiation-free and real-time imaging of organs and blood vessels

Ultrasound (also called sonography) is a safe, noninvasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside your body. It is commonly used to evaluate organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart, as well as the reproductive system. Doppler ultrasound is a special type of ultrasound that is used to evaluate how blood is flowing throughout the body’s vascular system, and can detect blockages or vessel narrowing. Ultrasound does not use any ionizing radiation, which is why it is so often used in prenatal imaging.

How does ultrasound work?

During an ultrasound exam, a small handheld device called a transducer is placed on your skin with a layer of gel to help transmit the sound waves. The transducer sends these waves into your body, where they bounce off tissues, organs, and fluids. The returning echoes are picked up by the transducer and processed by a computer to create real-time images on a screen. Because different types of tissue reflect sound waves differently, ultrasound can show detailed pictures of what’s happening inside your body without using radiation.

What can I expect during my ultrasound?

Having an ultrasound is a simple, comfortable, and painless experience. You will lie on an exam table or sit upright, depending on the area of the body being imaged. A technologist will then apply a warm, clear gel to the area being examined—this helps the ultrasound device make good contact with your skin. A small handheld probe is then gently moved over the area to capture images. You may feel slight pressure but no pain. The exam typically takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of study. In some cases, you may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly to improve the images. After the procedure, the gel is wiped off, and you can return to your normal activities without delay.
